Panel Arctic Sessions
The Arctic is a challenging and rapidly changing environment in which to operate and develop resources. A firm, science-based, understanding of the physical, biological, and human environments is a requirement for successful resource exploration and development. A panel of experienced practitioners of science in the Arctic will discuss the current status of scientific information, research initiatives that continue to expand knowledge, and the standards that must be met to work safely and sustainably. The roles of governments, stakeholders, industry, and the research community in achieving the necessary basis in science, maintaining continuity and archival of data and information, and application to permitting, operation, and maintenance of system integrity will be examined. Attendees will acquire a roadmap of what science is needed, what exists, what needs to be done, and how effective research can be achieved through collaboration and investment.
